Food Intolerance – In Pets & Their People

In this section:

Gluten Intolerance and Your Pet – This paper is an article I wrote for the newsletter of Celiac.com when asked about the prevalence of celiac disease (gluten intolerance) in the dog and cat. This condition has been definitively diagnosed in the Irish Setter but not many other breeds of dogs. I will not be at all surprised when we find that it does exist in numerous other breeds… and even the lovable mutt…but as this article explains, that may very well be a moot point. Gluten is only the beginning.

Dogtor J’s Recommended Pet Foods – Once again, this area is in a dynamic state for the same reasons as above. Thankfully, there are still some pet foods at the grocery store and pet shops that will meet the budget-minded pet owner’s needs while helping many of the chronic conditions from which their pet suffers. None of these are “ideal”, but the elimination of wheat, barley, dairy, and soy can produce miraculous results in many pets (and people). Once again, I strongly urge owners to add fresh vegetables, fruits, and a source of natural protein (meats, eggs) to these commercial diets to  make them more nutritionally complete.

Food Intolerance – Man and Animals versus Gluten, Casein, Soy and Corn (or How We Won the Battle of “Helm’s Deep” – Put on your seatbelts. This is my latest offering and is the written text from the lecture that I will be giving at the annual meeting of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. It is basically The Answer retold from a slightly different perspective, containing some new information and insights….but much shorter. (“Yeah!!!”) This paper is (only) 16 pages long (versus the other 43 page epic) but should leave the reader with the same grasp of the new “gospel” of medicine I am preaching…the GOOD news: We do have our health destiny more in our own hands than we’ve ever believed, certainly more than you’ve been told. How cool is that???

(But please keep something in mind: I do not have total disdain for the medical establishment. I have no business throwing stones because I thought just like the majority of doctors for the better part of my career…until 5 year ago. It was the “revelation” that I write about in this piece and The Answer that not only changed my personal medical life but also the way I view our body and the way in which we care for it. So, as you read this article, remember that I am speaking to a group of alternative medicine professionals, some of which may have contempt for the medical profession just as many of you do, having voiced this sentiment to me in person and through Emails. I am simply playing on these heart-strings a bit in an attempt to elicit a response that is more than intellectual. I want them…and you…to see the breadth and depth of this critical subject. I want to get the heart involved, not just the brain. I hope it does that for you. If not, I haven’t done my job…yet.)

The Answer – to “Why Is the Plane of Our Nation’s Health In a Death Spiral?” – This 40-plus page paper is my first major paper, written in 2001 and hurriedly placed on this site on that fateful and tragic day of 9-11. It represents the culmination of nearly two years of research on the subject of food-related disorders and contains an amazing amount of facts that have been hidden from public view concerning this subject. It covers how certain foods came into being and common usage and how they directly relate to such conditions as epilepsy, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, ADHD, pain syndromes, depression, and allergies. Severe immune-mediated diseases like diabetes, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis are also covered.

I wrote this piece in about two days, drawing from my research and exam room conversations that I had with my veterinary clients while sharing this vital information. To be honest, I barely proof-read it before deciding to publish it to the Web on that day that changed all of our lives. I had been studying numerous things in addition to medicine over those two years that preceded the composition of The Answer and my head was in an “interesting” place when our country was attacked. In short, I felt compelled to put this piece on my site immediately and without further review.

I planned for months…which turned to years…to review and rewrite this paper. Yes, it needs some serious editing as some of you have pointed out. But I have to say in my “defense” that this paper represents a…no THE…major turning point in my life. Prior to this, I absolutely loathed writing. This “flaw” is one of the things that kept me from pursuing academics following my rather high-powered internship. The adage of “publish or perish” scared me to death.

But something changed inside me as I learned the truths that I am now so desperate to share with the entire world. Call it a mission or a quest or a calling but it changed me…thoroughly. (You can visit the Editorial section for more insight into this metamorphosis.)

So, I have decided to leave this paper alone, letting it be what it is…a first attempt to share this vital information about our declining health and a landmark for me- a historical marker that I can always look back on when I want or need to see how my life was changed forever.

Yes, it is quite long, but it appeared on my computer screen and was placed onto the Web just as it came out of my head. And it is wordy in places. Hey, I like the sound of my own voice. LOL.  And like I tell my clients, “There is no law that you have to read it all in one sitting. Think of it as a free, short book rather than a long research paper. It’s all how you look at it, right?”

The one thing I can say is that this information WILL change your life…guaranteed!!!

Just Desserts

These are little tidbits of knowledge I’ve discovered or insights I’ve gained over the years while doing my in-depth studies. For example, did you know researchers have found that nearly 40% of the genetic information in our DNA is viral information? This explains what we call “genetic diseases” including familial and breed tendencies toward food intolerance (e.g. celiac disease), neurological disorders (e.g. epilepsy), and numerous cancers.

Blogtor J

Welcome to the blog of the new DogtorJ.com. New research into the origin of our medical woes has revealed something startling: As it turns out, we are our own worst enemy. Yes, the Pogo quote of yesteryear found in the title of this article is quite accurate when applied to our medical lives. We love to discuss those things that we call “causes” of diseases even though we often have little clue as to how these things really cause illness. Even medical professionals can have difficulty grasping the true cause-and-effect. But that is understandable once some insight is gained into the true nature of medical training.

News Flash!

In this section, I will be placing links to the latest breaking news in the food world, including updates on the use of elimination diets to control disease, articles on pet food, the truth about GMO foods and more. I will do my best to balance the bad with the good, but try to remember: Much of this will seem like bad news but at least we know about it now…and can change it!

With some of these stories, I will include a link to a blog entry so that you can comment on the article. This idea came to me after reading the first entry, which is a news flash that made my blood boil.

It represents the culmination of nearly two years of research on the subject of food-related disorders and contains an amazing amount of facts that have been hidden from public view concerning this subject. It covers how the “big 4” trouble foods- gluten, dairy, soy and corn- came into being, catapulted into common usage, and became directly involved in most of our serious medical conditions, including epilepsy, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, ADHD, pain syndromes, depression, and allergies. Severe immune-mediated diseases such as diabetes, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis are also covered.
