Dear ________________,
Here is your second edition of Dogtor J’s News You Can Use, the monthly newsletter of DogtorJ.com. It contains links to the latest papers, blogs and research findings that you will find on my ever-expanding Website. There appears to be no end to what we can learn about the true nature of illness and how to prevent it.

For example, I have been busily researching the role of viruses and bacteria in our day-to-day lives and I have to say that this is the most fascinating part of my medical studies over the past ten years. Although we were taught a good bit of virology and bacteriology in veterinary school, the most intriguing aspect of these microorganisms was left out: They play a vital role in the body’s ability to adapt to our ever-changing world. Most people view these tiny entities as the enemy. While some microbes do sicken us upon acquisition, many of those same organisms serve an important purpose in the long run.

I hope the following articles help you see why I so frequently quote Pogo, the cartoon character of the past, who said “We have met the enemy and he is us“. Many of the viruses and bacteria that have been mislabeled as “causes of disease” are simply reacting to the insults, both chemical and nutritional, that we keep hurling at them. Most symptoms are little more than warnings that our body is trying to adapt to these self-inflicted insults. The more serious ones (“autoimmune” diseases and cancer) are signs that our body is tiring of the struggle.

Yes…we are our own worst enemy. Our diets, lifestyles and environments are taking their toll. Why don’t we decide…today…to change that?

Bacteria – The Good, the “Bad” & the Ugly
Bacteria and WBCsThe science behind pleomorphic bacteria is an incredibly fascinating aspect of medicine and one that is just now coming into its own. Over man’s medical history, we went from simply observing fungi and molds growing on things to deciding that there must be “germs” inside our bodies causing disease. Much later, we observed these tiny entities under a new piece of equipment known as the microscope. We then hypothesized that there had to be something even smaller than bacteria causing disease, later proving the existence of the virus. We knew they were there, due to the absence of a bacterial entity, but we were not able to actually see them until the invention of the electron microscope.
We have now repeated history with the discovery of the pleomorph- a cell wall-deficient bacterium that can crawl inside the cell in true viral fashion. In doing so, we’ve taken a step backwards- or at least sideways – in the “evolution” of medicine as we’ve finally come to grips with the importance of this dynamic group of bacteria also known as L- forms and mollicutes.

Viruses – Friend or Foe?
Virus cross-sectionHere is the link to the section of the site that answers this very important question. Rather than placing a single paper here, I am inviting you to wander through this area and see what grabs your attention.
I am still working on the organization of this section but I think you will find something of interest here if not simply get a hint of the mind-altering, maybe even mind-bending, nature of viruses and what they are doing for you and me every millisecond of each and every day.
Yes…we have demonized these submicroscopic entities and understandably so: Our education has left out a very important aspect of their nature. Like bacteria, viruses play a vital role in our body’s ability to adapt to immunological insults they encounter. Whether it is another virus, an abnormal food protein or a carcinogen in cigarette smoke, these fascinating microbes help our cells deal with the challenge.
And don’t forget to thank your ancestors: Nearly 40% of your DNA is viral information that has been handed down through the ages. Yes, many of these viral codes are involved in “genetic disease”, but once we see that symptoms are not the enemy and that these viruses are simply reacting to the insults we throw at them, we can plot a course for wellness rarely imagined by those in “modern medicine”.

We have met the enemy and he is us.”
Pogo cartoonNew research into the origin of our medical woes has revealed something startling. It turns out that we are our own worst enemy. Surprised?
The Pogo quote of yesteryear found in the title of this article is quite accurate when applied to our medical lives. We love to discuss those things that we call “causes” of disease even though we often have little clue as to how these things really prompt symptoms. Even medical professionals can have difficulty grasping the true cause-and-effect relationship between microbes, diet, carcinogens, and disease symptoms. But that is understandable once some insight is gained into the true nature of our medical training.

Ears of corn
A Brief History of “the Big 4″

I have been gluten-free for over ten years now. But it did not take long for me to realize that there were other foods that needed to be eliminated from our diets…and those of my veterinary patients. Within a few months of starting down this road, I had discovered that dairy was not “nature’s perfect food”, soy was not a “health food” and that corn was the fourth food that induced villous atrophy of the small intestine, just as gluten does. Turns out, my four-legged patients needed this info as badly as I did.
Yes, I began placing all of my dog and cat patients on the same diet that I had adopted for myself, starting with the elimination of wheat and later adding restrictions from soy, corn and all dairy products. Miracles started happening in my veterinary patients! And why wouldn’t they? Dogs and cats are carnivores and not only would they never elect to eat gluten grains, dairy, soy and corn, they would not even be exposed to them. These trouble foods are all man-cultivated items.
So… when did we mess things up so badly? You have to look back – way back.

These are little tidbits of knowledge I’ve discovered or insights I’ve gained over the years while doing my in-depth studies. For example, did you know researchers have found that nearly 40% of the genetic information in our DNA is viral information? This explains what we call “genetic diseases” including familial and breed tendencies toward food intolerance (e.g. celiac disease), neurological disorders (e.g. epilepsy), and numerous cancers.

In this section, I will be placing links to the latest breaking news in the food world, including updates on the use of elimination diets to control disease, articles on pet food, the truth about GMO foods and more. I will do my best to balance the bad with the good, but try to remember: Much of this will seem like bad news but at least we know about it now…and can change it!

With some of these stories, I will include a link to a blog entry so that you can comment on the article. This idea came to me after reading the first entry, which is a news flash that made my blood boil.
